Why was my credit card
"blocked'? |
| |
|
Have you ever given
your credit card to
a store, only to be
told you were over
your credit limit?
If this happened
after you stayed at
a hotel or rented a
car, credit card
“blocking” may have
caused the problem.
A credit or charge
card "block" can
occur when a clerk
at a hotel, motel or
rental car agency
contacts your card
issuer
electronically with
the estimated cost
of your stay or
rental, and your
line of credit is
reduced by that
amount. The block
could remain for 10
to 15 days, even if
you paid the bill in
cash or with another
credit card.
Consumers should
check how long their
card issuer’s block
credit lines for
these types of
transactions. In
addition, consumers
should ask clerks
how much is being
blocked on their
credit cards. A
consumer who pays
the bill in cash or
with a card that is
different from the
one originally given
to the clerk should
ask the clerk to
release any block
applied to the card.
